The Soul Behind the Saw
Hello, I’m Anthony, but I go by Vando. For a long time, I lived life as an active tradesman until a 2015 car accident altered my path. The collision caused serious spinal damage, forcing me into years of intense rehab and a total career rethink. What began as a struggle for physical health transformed into a deep connection with the natural beauty of Australian hardwood. Crafting timber became my therapy, providing a way to reconstruct my life while working with salvaged materials—it restored my spirit and gave me a fresh calling. Now located in Tambo Upper, I channel that strength into every bespoke item I handcraft using exclusively recycled and reclaimed Australian timbers. Each curve and joint reflects the discipline I developed during my healing years, ensuring that every project is built with integrity and designed to become a family heirloom. My dedication to exclusively working with Australian hardwoods shares a narrative of endurance and skill. I invite you to explore my world. The Roots of My Craftsmanship
The Story So Far I am Anthony—Vando to my friends. My journey with woodwork began in a quiet garage, fueled by a fascination with the rich textures of Australian timber. That early passion eventually grew into a professional trade on the NSW Central Coast, where I specialized in creating bespoke furniture from salvaged local hardwoods. A Life-Changing Moment My path took an unexpected turn when a car accident left me with a severe spinal injury. I found myself facing multiple damaged discs and debilitating nerve issues that compromised my mobility and independence. It was a profound shift that required me to step away from the tools I loved. Rehab and Recovery Over several years, I underwent multiple surgeries and an grueling rehabilitation process. This trial wasn't just physical; it deeply affected my mental health as I struggled to find my identity without my craft. Through long days of physical therapy and sheer perseverance, I slowly rebuilt my strength. This period taught me an incredible sense of patience and grit—values that are now deeply embedded in every piece of timber I touch. Finding Woodwork Again Returning to the workshop was more than a career move; it was a homecoming to my true self. Since picking up the tools again, I have dedicated my life to high-end custom builds using only reclaimed Australian hardwoods. I find joy in revealing the unique stories hidden within the grain of recycled timber. Where I Am Now Today, Vando's Woodshop is flourishing in Tambo Upper, Victoria. My vision is rooted in respect for our native landscape: to create enduring, functional art from recycled materials that will be cherished for generations to come.
